The Mijas auditorium has further consolidated its summer cultural programme with a new edition of Blues Night, held on Friday 17th. Organized by the Tourism Department, the initiative combines tourism promotion with community support in a free-entry event that packed out the municipal venue.

The councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), highlighted the high calibre of the event, describing it as “a concert featuring top-class artists; the support act is great, but the headline band is the best in the country”. He also emphasised the diversity of the local programme, stating that “there's something for everyone; we have options to suit every single taste”.

Tribute to an icon

The evening kicked off with a performance by A Piece of Janis. “We formed to pay tribute to Janis Joplin when almost 50 years had passed”, explained band member Fran Malpica. Meanwhile, his bandmate Carlos Campos praised the nature of the event, noting that it was “a great, free charity event, where you just give whatever you can, so you couldn't ask for more”.

The highlight of the night came with the Vargas Blues Band, one of the most highly regarded acts on the Spanish blues scene, who showcased their mastery on stage.

The bar was run by Club Deportivo Mijas, completing the evening's entertainment package. Rubén García, promoter at Más Animación, confirmed that this was precisely the vision behind the initiative.

Kilos of help

The only requirement for entry was the donation of one kilo of non-perishable food for Cáritas. “The team at Cáritas are collecting huge amounts of food; it's important to remember that, even though entry is free, this is a charity concert,”, emphasised Jerez, who welcomed the opportunity to offer “a truly fantastic blues gig that draws a bigger crowd every year”.

The public response fully backed the town’s blend of music and community spirit. Local resident Salvadora Sánchez summed up the general feeling about the auditorium's varied programme: "Blues tonight, jazz the other day, I love it, I really do".
