The Town Hall urges caution due to extreme risk from high temperatures

The Mijas Town Hall observed a minute’s silence on Friday 10th as a mark of respect and support for the victims of the wildfire that broke out in the early hours of the morning in the Almería town of Los Gallardos. The tragedy has so far left at least 13 people dead, 26 missing, several injured and over 1,400 evacuated.

The event, held outside the town hall, brought together municipal representatives, members of the Local Police and Civil Guard, and council staff, who wished to show their solidarity with the families affected by this tragedy.

On Friday, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), offered the institution’s condolences and support to those affected, while also highlighting the work of the emergency services: “We would like to send our heartfelt support to all those families who are suffering as a result of this situation, to the families who have lost loved ones and, of course, to all the teams who are currently working on the ground to bring the emergency situation in the Almería area under control as soon as possible".

The spokesperson for the Vox municipal group, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson, also expressed his condolences and support for those affected: “That is the main thing, to stand by them and help them in every way possible, ensuring they receive all the assistance they need”.

In light of these events, the Andalusian Regional Government declared three days of mourning, from midnight on Friday until midnight on Sunday.

Call for caution

During her speech, the mayoress also emphasised the importance of exercising extreme caution given the high risk of fires due to the high temperatures, noting that the region is on alert. In this regard, she noted that “yesterday [Thursday 9th] we were also aware that there was another fire near Mijas, in Benahavís, which is also being tackled; we are in a state of alert and emergency in which we all have a responsibility to be very cautious, to comply with the regulations and, above all, to monitor any situation that could pose a danger to our environment”.

The Town Hall has reiterated its message of caution to the public, appealing to collective responsibility to prevent further incidents in this particularly sensitive context.
