Mijas heads into the weekend with a packed leisure programme catering for everyone in Mijas Pueblo, Las Lagunas and La Cala. The line-up includes, among many other events and activities, the third edition of the Gastrolatino Festival and the traditional Jazz Night.
Friday 19th
This weekend’s programme kicks off on Friday 19th with the opening of the exhibition ‘Between Light and Colour’ by Livia Yolanda Molina-Bailén Luque, which can be visited in the exhibition hall of the La Cala Cultural Centre from 20:00 and will remain open until the 19th of July.
On the same day, at 9:00, the theatre musical ‘Peter Pan’ will be staged at the La Cala Branch Office, with free admission and in collaboration with Harmony Music and Ark Christian School. In the afternoon at 17:00, the same venue will host a concert by Harmony Music’s youth bands, also with free admission.
Literature will also have its place this weekend. At 19:00, La Dulzura café in La Laguna will host a new session of the Santi Clemente Spring Literary Series, where the writers Hilda Tomás and Luna Peralta will present their novels, ‘Tarot y mancias’ and ‘Alternativas mentales humanas. Normalización y tratamientos’, respectively. Admission to this literary event is free. Furthermore, at 19.30, also with free admission, the Mijas Pueblo Folk Museum will host the launch of the book ‘Drita y Murci’ and the talk ‘‘Los murciélagos, un mundo de sorpresas’, given by Alfredo Valencia, a member of Ecologistas en Acción.
Flamenco will also take centre stage on Friday with the 37th Velero Flamenco Festival, to be held at the Peña Flamenca Unión del Cante from 21:00. The line-up will feature Galacho de Málaga and Mari Carmen Corpas on vocals, accompanied by Juan de Córdoba on guitar.
To round off the day, from 18:00, Latin music and cuisine will take over Plaza Virgen de la Peña in Mijas Pueblo for the 3rd Mijas Gastrolatino Festival. Friday evening's line-up includes salsa covers in English, children’s entertainment, Latin music and animation, a tribute to Marc Anthony, and a performance by Lisandro and his orchestra. Everyone is invited to this free festival, now in its third year in the town.
Saturday 20th
On Saturday 20th of June, the programme begins with family-friendly activities. At 19:00, Victoria Kent Park in Las Lagunas will host the ‘Summer without Violence’ family scavenger hunt, an initiative organised by the Family and Equal Opportunities Department, featuring games, challenges, clues and workshops to learn, share and enjoy as a family.
Also on Saturday, from 11:00 to 15:30, the 1st Adimi Summer Festival and Fair will take place at its centre, located at 5 Candilera de la Torre Street. The day’s programme will include prize draws, competitions, crafts, gifts, food and much more.
The Mijas Pueblo Folk Museum will also host the 13th anniversary of the Patio de Ensueño Poetry Circle on Saturday at 19:30, with free admission. Meanwhile,the La Cala Boulevard car park will host an event from 18:30 to mark International ALS Day. Visitors are invited to sample Spain’s largest puff pastry ribbon, with all proceeds going towards research into this disease. Furthermore, to liven up the afternoon, the brass band La Peña Miheña and the Víctor Rojas dance group will perform.
Saturday evening will also be filled with music. At 22:00, the Miguel González Berral Municipal Auditorium in Mijas Pueblo will host a jazz night featuring the groups ‘O Sister!’ and ‘The Dixie Kings’. This event is a charity initiative, with admission subject to the donation of non-perishable food items to benefit the Mijas Municipal Food Bank. At the same time, the Peña Flamenca del Sur will host a Flamenco Night featuring Aroa Cala on vocals and Carlos Haro on guitar.
The 3rd Gastrolatino Festival continues on Saturday in Plaza Virgen de la Peña from 18:00, featuring salsa covers in English, children’s entertainment, Latin music, a tribute to Juan Luis Guerra and Romeo Santos, and a performance by Andrés Pino and his orchestra.
Sunday 21st
On Sunday 21st of June, the Gastrolatino Festival brings this third edition to a close in Plaza Virgen de la Peña from 18:00. The day’s programme includes a screening of the Spain vs Saudi Arabia football match, Latin entertainment, a tribute to Carlos Vives, and a live show featuring gifts for the audience.
That same Sunday at 20:30, the Miguel González Berral Municipal Auditorium will host a charity gala by the dance groups Baila Passion in aid of the Sembrando Sonrisas charity.
Art and exhibitions
The weekend’s cultural programme is rounded off with several exhibitions. At the CAC Mijas in Mijas Pueblo, the photography and bodypainting exhibition ‘Between Two Souls’ by María Márquez and Luisa Machen will be on display until the 9th of July. The Las Lagunas Cultural Center is hosting an exhibition of work from the UP craft workshop, led by instructor Lourdes Ruiz, until the 19th of June. Furthermore, the Mijas Pueblo Folk Museum will keep the exhibition ‘40 Years of Environmentalism in Defence of Nature’ open to the public until the 29th of June.
Don’t miss…
The Las Lagunas Active Participation Centre is hosting a dance for senior citizens on Friday from 20:00 to 22:30, with no prior registration required. In Mijas Pueblo and La Cala, the next dances will take place on the 5th of July and the 28th of June, respectively.
Finally, the square opposite the La Cala Branch Office will host charity stalls from 11:00 to 14:00 on the 20th of June, as well as on the 15th and 18th of July and the 26th and 29th of August.
