It was in 1586 when the Virgen de la Peña appeared to the young shepherds, Juan and Asunción, on the exact site where the chapel dedicated to her image stands today, at El Compás in Mijas Pueblo. On Tuesday 2nd June, 440 years have passed since this event, a date that the Brotherhood of Ntra. Sra. la Santísima Virgen de la Peña is marking with a series of religious services.
These services began on 30 and 31 May and continue today, 1 June, at 19:30, with a triduum led by parish priest Hermán Marcel Lunar at the Virgen de la Peña sanctuary. Moving into Tuesday 2nd, the Holy Rosary will be recited at 07:30, proceeding from the Inmaculada parish church to El Compás. At 12:00, the Angelus will be prayed alongside a general peeling of church bells, followed by Holy Mass celebrated outside the chapel at 20:00. After the Eucharist, devotees will be able to partake in the traditional kissing of the Virgin's mantle (besamanto).
