On Monday, the Mijas Town Hall opened the exhibition ‘Handmade: The Power of Creation’ at the Mijas Pueblo Tourist Office. The showcase has been organised by the Mijas Arts Centre and coordinated by the centre’s artist and teacher Jessica Persson.
The exhibition features a selection of works created by students of various ages across a range of disciplines, including painting, drawing and ceramics. The display is complemented by some of Persson’s signature ceramic works.
During the presentation, the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), highlighted the value of these cultural initiatives, which “help to enrich Mijas’s tourist and cultural appeal, while also showcasing the enormous talent and creativity that exists in our municipality, on this occasion from the children”. Jerez emphasised that “Mijas is not just a sun and beach destination; it is also about art, culture and craftsmanship”, stressing that venues such as the Tourist Office “bring the work of our local artists and creators closer to both residents and visitors”. The councillor also thanked the Mijas Arts Centre and Jessica Persson “for continuing to promote artistic learning and making art accessible to people of all ages”. He further noted that the students and members of this centre are “mainly foreign residents, including some spanning two or three generations, who already live in Mijas and form part of our social fabric”.
For her part, Persson explained that the exhibition was conceived with the aim of showcasing “the power of creation and how art helps to develop each student’s observation, interpretation and self-expression”. The artist noted that each piece “reflects time, effort and a conscious intention that words often cannot fully express”, while also highlighting the value of manual and creative work in both painting and ceramics. Persson also thanked “the enthusiasm, creativity and eagerness to learn shown by all the students”, adding that she felt “delighted and impressed by the progress and artistic expression they have demonstrated”.
The exhibition comprises watercolour drawings, sketches and preparatory studies, as well as ceramic pieces featuring different glazing, firing and treatment methods.
The exhibition of children’s artwork will be on display at the Mijas Pueblo Tourist Office until the 28th of May, opening Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 15:00 hours.
