The Mijas Town Hall is making progress with the reopening of the section of the Coastal Path at El Bombo beach that was damaged by storms at the end of March. The company Sardalla Española has been working in the area for three weeks to restore the walkway and the retaining wall near the Las Mimosas urbanisation, which partially collapsed due to the force of the waves.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), carried out an inspection of the repair works last Wednesday, 13th of May, together with the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP). There she was briefed on the progress of the works, which currently consist of constructing a riprap wall prior to the new piling for the walkway structure. “We have come here today to check on the good pace of work on this project and also to address other issues that we will be taking note of to ensure the summer season is the best yet in Mijas”, said the mayoress, who recalled that “a collapse occurred and emergency action had to be taken so that it could be restored as soon as possible and people could walk through as normal, I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to residents for any inconvenience these works may cause”.

- El plazo de ejecución de los trabajos es de 60 días, se espera que estén listos para el 20 de junio.

The project
The project began with the dismantling and removal of the structure damaged by the storm, before proceeding to remove the perimeter wall of the Las Mimosas urbanisation affected by the collapse. Once the ground on which the structure stands has been stabilised, wooden piles will be driven to a depth of two metres below sea level and four metres in height. “Work is currently underway to create a chain of riprap, which will serve as the foundation for the piles. Piling is being carried out in the area, something that has never been done before, to strengthen this section”, stated the councillor for Beaches.

Workers are now using dumper trucks and excavators along a 160-metre stretch of this section of the Coastal Path. It should be noted that this work was the subject of an emergency contract awarded by the Infrastructure Department, given the need for both this section and the Las Mimosas wall to be repaired as soon as possible.

Furthermore, the project includes protection with riprap below the sand level, the assembly of the wooden structure, the decking, the handrail and the wooden bench, and finally the restoration of the existing boundary wall in the urbanisation. The execution period for the works is 60 days from the start date; therefore, completion is expected around the 20th of June.
The walkway resulting from this emergency project will once again be three metres wide, supported by pine wood piles.
