CAC Mijas received,on Thursday 30th of April, two significant gifts that will remain on display at the art centre: a painting of Dalí and ‘an original piece by the artist’, a melting clock representing his work ‘The Persistence of Memory’. Influenced by Einstein and his theory on the relativity of time, Salvador Dalí created the so-called melting watches, through which he suggests that time is not absolute, but can stretch, melt and change, reflecting inner time or ‘dream-time’. This piece will remain at CAC Mijas as part of its permanent exhibition for the enjoyment of visitors and local residents.
“The work by Salvador Dalí that we have unveiled is a bronze sculpture, weighing 3 kilos and measuring 49 centimetres; it is one of the famous melting watches he created and is very well known”, explained the director of the CAC Mijas, Javier Fructuoso.

“It is a life-size, full-length portrait of Salvador Dalí that we commissioned from a painter who works with us frequently”, notes Fructuoso. The CAC is thus making room for another genius, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Both works will remain in Mijas and form part of the centre’s treasures.
“This contemporary art centre is a real luxury for Mijas, as it so faithfully captures that appreciation for art, and for the traditional in terms of painting and sculpture”, notes Mata.

“It is a painting on linen canvas using the oil technique, and that is how we have executed it; the painting has even been personalised with the pocket watch, which is here in the permanent exhibition”, said Francisco Jesús Rodríguez, the painter.
Management at CAC Mijas hope that Dalí will prove to be as popular for photographs as the Picasso painting has been.
