The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the  provincial delegate for Health of the Andalusian Regional Government, Carlos Bautista, presented an awareness campaign on Friday 30th on the appropriate use of screens among minors. The initiative is a collaboration between the Costa del Sol Primary Care District of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) and Mijas Comunicación.

Under the name ‘Peques sin pantallas’ (Kids Without Screens), this awareness action consists of a series of videos in which healthcare professionals report on the harmful effects of the inappropriate use of mobile devices among young children.

  • La alcaldesa de Mijas, Ana Mata, agradecía el trabajo de todos los pediatras y su participación en la campaña.

The initiative comprises a series of informative clips to be broadcast on Mijas Comunicación from Monday 4th, with one released per day until all ten themed videos have been aired. On Monday 4th of May, the first video will be released, focusing on boredom management; on Tuesday, how excessive screen time can affect eating habits;  on the 6th, on attachment; on Thursday 7th, screens and learning; and on Friday 8th, families as role models.

Brain development

The campaign will continue on Monday 11th with a video on brain development. On Tuesday 12th, paediatricians will discuss how screens can affect children’s eyesight; on Wednesday 13th, the topic will be language; on Thursday 14th, obesity; and finally, on Friday 15th, the material will focus on managing tantrums.

In addition to the audiovisual content, the campaign includes printed material that will also be distributed across health, educational and social centres, as well as municipal offices.

In fact, this initiative is included as a cross-cutting project within the framework of the working group comprising the departments of Health, Youth and Education, and the Costa del Sol Primary Care District, together with the Andalusian Health Service via the La Cala and Las Lagunas Health Centres and the municipal company Mijas Comunicación.

Round table

As a complementary activity, a round table will be held at Mijas Comunicación, where several experts in the field will have the opportunity to open the debate on this topic and increase the perception of risk among families and the general public regarding screen exposure for babies and children. The campaign can be viewed and downloaded at www.mijas.es and www.mijascomunicacion.com.

Public Health

The mayoress of Mijas noted during the presentation of ‘Peques sin  pantallas’ that the Spanish Society of Adolescence has just issued a report with scientific evidence “demonstrating that certain digital exposures contribute to specific adverse outcomes”. Also present at the launch were eight paediatricians from the municipality’s three health centres, as well as the manager of the Costa del Sol Health District, Elena Ayllón; the director of the Las Lagunas Health Centre, Gregorio Ortega; and Maite Gorrotxategi, a health education officer for the health district.

Finally, the regional delegate for Health of the Andalusian Regional Government explained that screens are a genuine addictive factor, scientifically documented, which complicates children’s cognitive development, “as they also stop participating in other beneficial activities such as sport, writing, painting or socialising with their peers”.
