The Town Hall awards the 304,000 euros contract to Sardalla Española, which includes dismantling, ground stabilization, piling, rock armour, and reconstruction

The Mijas Town Hall will carry out emergency works to restore a section of the Coastal Path in the Las Mimosas area (El Bombo), which was damaged by gale-force winds that hit the coast between. The Infrastructure Department has already issued the mandatory damage report and awarded the contract to the company Sardalla Española, S.A., at a cost of 304,000 euros.

Storm Therese, the nineteenth high-impact storm of the 2025–2026 season, was responsible for the damage to the Mijas coastline during those dates. The adverse weather event was characterised by strong easterly winds, force 7 on the Beaufort scale. The storm generated severe coastal conditions along the Costa del Sol, with wind gusts of up to 55 km/h and waves between 3 and 4 metres high.

Damage

These coastal phenomena caused significant damage to El Bombo beach, primarily through sand loss and the scouring of the Coastal Path’s foundations. This resulted in instability and the partial collapse of a section of the walkway. In addition to the damage to the wooden structure itself, the perimeter fencing of the Las Mimosas residential estate was also affected.

The Infrastructure and Beaches departments closed off access to the damaged section on the 20th of March. As a result, the pedestrian route is currently interrupted due to public safety risks, particularly for residents of neighbouring properties, as well as customers and staff of nearby hospitality businesses.

The objectives of this emergency intervention are to restore the stability of the Coastal Path, ensure user safety, prevent further erosion or collapses, and return the coastal front to full public use.

Works

Specifically, the project includes the dismantling and removal of the damaged wooden walkway and the affected fencing at the Las Mimosas estate. It also involves the remediation of the ground supporting the structure and the driving of wooden piles to a depth of at least one metre below sea level.

Furthermore, rock armour protection will be installed below the sand line. The wooden structure will then be reassembled, including the decking, handrails, and seating. Finally, the estate’s perimeter fencing will be reinstated. According to the contract, the works have an execution period of 60 days from the start date.

The resulting walkway will be three metres wide, supported by pine piles driven to a minimum depth of one metre below sea level.
