For the second consecutive year, La Cala hosted the Second Waiters’ Race last weekend. I was a thoroughly charming and entertaining event organised by the Lions Club, in which professionals from the catering industry had to demonstrate their skill with a tray. Running was strictly forbidden; therefore, participants had to walk as nimbly as possible, maintaining their balance without spilling anything. 

The Club’s president, Anita Humphreys, explained that “it has been a very difficult race but there are a lot of people here, a great many. The Lions Club is a wonderful club that wants to help all communities in need, and if anyone has problems, all they have to do is speak to us”. Alongside her was Mario Bravo (PP), the councillor for Foreigners, a department which also collaborated in the organisation of the event. Bravo stated that “almost everyone brought the drinks and food on their plates, proving that they are capable of moving and serving customers quickly. Above all, it has been a competition for fun, and the objective was to raise money so that the Lions Club can continue the wonderful work that it does”.

The race

A total of nine participants took part in this challenge. On their trays, they carried a coffee, a glass of water, and a bread roll. The course also had its own complications. The overall winner, Rafael Leducq, was participating for the first time and appeared surprised and very happy: “I’ve been working with a tray for many years and today was the day to show people how I handle it. I still can’t believe it because I really wanted to participate and, why not, win. Thank you very much. I love it”. All the participants agreed that, once the race was over, they felt the tension particularly in their legs. This was the case for Brandon Pointer, who said that his “legs were very swollen”. He took the “third prize for completing the full lap. My goodness, how difficult. And the prize for our bar, Bar Tuta, ffor raising the largest amount of money among the competitors, around 1,470 euros”.

A large number of people enjoyed the event, which also featured a market, children’s workshops and the Barakatun batukada from the group Espacio Drang. The Town Hall has confirmed that “there will be a third edition next year, which will probably take place during the last weekend of March”.
