As on every last Wednesday and Saturday of the month, the solidarity tables returned last weekend to the square in front of the La Cala Town Hall Branch. The Foreigners Department of the Mijas Town Hall organises this activity which seeks, in addition to raising funds for social causes, to raise awareness of the participating associations. Mijas is a municipality with an extensive network of associations, and for this reason, the Town Hall strives every day to do its bit and lend a helping hand through initiatives such as this. The councillor for the department, Mario Bravo (PP), stated that “society needs to become increasingly aware of the various problems we face, as the local authority cannot solve them all, and it is good that there are associations that look after animals, children, or victims of abuse, among many other causes where the administration is also involved but where society perhaps demands a little more”. 

During this Easter weekend, in which sunshine and pleasant temperatures were the main features, groups such as Soroptimist International, Aristochat, Diksha, and Huella Felina, among others, took part. The president of Soroptimist International Costa del Sol, Daphne Theunissen, said that “usually people come more to look than to buy, but it’s also a good experience for us members because we chat, we laugh and we sell a little; furthermore, we can explain what the organisation is all about, and I think that’s always important, that people know what Soroptimist is and what we’re doing”. 

Another participant, Chantal Lancelot, president of Aristochat, said that “we must help because there are so many animals that we continue to find on the streets, abandoned. It is sunny today, people are friendly, and the festivities are here. There are many tourists and we are going to be positive; in life, one must be positive”. The next dates for these stalls will be Saturday 25th and Wednesday 29th of April.
