Members of the Mijas Toastmasters Club competed last Saturday 14th in a public speaking competition alongside clubs from Málaga, Seville and Granada, all belonging to Area 2. Thanks to these events, which are held annually at the club, area, division and district levels, participants develop public speaking and leadership skills and have the opportunity to excel in a competitive environment and progress through successive rounds. 

According to a press release from the club, “it was a day full of energy, fostering deep friendship and lasting camaraderie”. Four members of the Mijas club, Costa del Sol Speakers, won awards in their respective categories. Joen Olsen took second place in the English speech category, as did Minerva Quijera in the Spanish speech category. Soledad Riveros, meanwhile, took first place in the French speech category, whilst Lauren Schuivens secured third place in the English evaluation category. 

The top two finishers in each category will advance to the division contest, to be held in Seville on the 11th of April. The road to the podium continues though the District Spring Conference, which will take place in Málaga from the 15th to the 17th of May, where the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be contested, culminating in the World Championship of Public Speaking in Vancouver (Canada) in August.

The Mijas club meets every Tuesday from 20:00 to 21:45 hours at the Las Lagunas Cultural Centre. Meetings alternate between English and Spanish each week.
