Mijas launches an urgent plan to replenish sand on the coast before the Easter break

  • The project, representing an investment of over 250,000 euros, involves the replenishment of more than 14,000 cubic metres of sand
  • The Town Hall denounces the inaction of the Spanish government, the authority responsible for coastal regeneration
  • Según explicó Mata, los áridos se obtendrán del arroyo de La Cala y la zona de levante de la playa caleña.

Work will begin shortly and will focus on the areas of El Bombo, Calahonda and Las Doradas

The Mijas Town Hall will implement an emergency sand replenishment plan for beaches affected by recent storms before the start of the Easter break. The project will be managed through an emergency contract to be awarded in the coming days, allocating over 250,000 euros for the replacement of 14,000 cubic metres of sand using specialised machinery.

This was announced on Friday by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), alongside the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), and the councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP), given "the inaction of the Spanish Government's Ministry of the Environment, which is the competent authority for beach regeneration under current law".

The works will focus on the areas of El Bombo, Calahonda (El Capricho / Alhamar) and Las Doradas, with an estimated contribution of 8,000, 3,000 and 3,000 cubic metres, respectively. Part of the sand will be sourced from the mouth of the La Cala stream and the eastern section of La Cala beach.

  • Los temporales de este invierno han reducido considerablemente la extensión de arena de algunas playas.

Three articulated dump trucks, a 20-tonne excavator, a 9-tonne excavator, two bulldozers, and a shovel loader will be deployed, explained the mayoress

Previous work completed

The mayoress added that the Mijas Town Hall has been working since the storms subsided, with replenishment and stabilisation efforts already completed at El Charcón and El Chaparral. These works were carried out using the Town Hall's own resources, via the Operational Services and Beaches departments.

Mata also recalled that on the 12th of February she formally notified the Ministry of the Environment of the poor state of the coastline and requested an urgent sand supply, which has since been authorised.

She thus defended "the municipal effort in an area outside its direct remit due to the lack of action by the Spanish Government". Mata added that the Town Hall will deliver for the people of Mijas, the environment, and the interests of the tourism sector.

  • La alcaldesa Ana Mata anunció este viernes el plan de actuación que llevará a cabo el Ayuntamiento.

Furthermore, Mata advocated for a permanent coastal stabilisation solution involving breakwaters and groynes "to prevent us from facing such a serious problem every year."

Separately, the Mijas Town Hall has already awarded the contract to rebuild the section of the Coastal Path that collapsed during the storms. This is "a municipal responsibility, and work is already underway to ensure the walkway is rebuilt and operational within a few weeks", Mata stated.

The contract has been awarded to the company VGC Global, SL, for a total of €222,931.61 and a completion period of 60 calendar days.
