Mata: "Mijas is growing as a tourist destination and is increasingly prominent on the Costa del Sol because it is increasingly in demand"

The tourism sector in Mijas grew in 2025 in terms of accommodation places, companies and employees. These are the main figures from the assessment carried out on Tuesday 24th by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor, Francisco Jerez (Vox), following the release of final year-end data by Turismo y Planificación Costa del Sol, a public company under the Málaga Provincial Council.

The mayoress described the current situation as "very satisfactory", as the number of beds on offer has increased by 9% compared to 2024. In this regard, Jerez pointed out that there are now more than 70,580 accommodation places in the municipality, while the number of establishments has risen by 11% to the current 10,277. "This reflects a diversified structure that allows us to adapt to different visitor profiles and new market demands", explained the councillor.

  • Según el Ayuntamiento, el empleo turístico también crece en Mijas, con más de 7.000 personas afiliadas a la Seguridad Social en este sector. |

Holiday rental homes lead these statistics, but the number of beds in hotels, rural houses, apartments, campsites and hostels is also growing, across the entire accommodation spectrum. "This means that Mijas is growing as a tourist destination and is becoming increasingly prominent on the Costa del Sol because it is increasingly in demand", said Mata.

Four and five stars

As far as purely hotel accommodation is concerned, practically all the beds in service in the municipality (96%) are four and five stars, "which gives an idea of the high quality of the establishments located in Mijas", said the mayoress, who pointed out the need to increase the hotel stock. To this end, the Urban Planning Department will prioritise applications for construction investments or hotel category upgrades.

Employment

In addition, Jerez highlighted that tourism employment is also growing in Mijas, with more than 7,000 people registered with Social Security in this sector. This figure represents 5% of the total number of tourism employees in the province as a whole. The main increases have been in the travel agency, tour operator and car rental sectors.

Businesses

In terms of the number of businesses, the figure is close to 800, an increase of 2.9% compared to 2024, representing 5.5% of the provincial total, the councillor pointed out. "Tourism continues to be an essential pillar of our local economy, especially in catering, tourist transport and accommodation, which account for most of the activity and employment. We are talking about thousands of families in Mijas whose stability depends directly on the good health of the sector", said Jerez.

Promotion and forecasts

Looking ahead to 2026, Mijas will intensify its presence in the main international tourism forums. In March, it will be present at the ITB Berlin, one of the most important trade fairs worldwide, where the new promotional campaign will be rolled out in a fully international setting, "as part of a strategy that seeks to strengthen our position in key European markets and consolidate the image of Mijas as a quality destination throughout the year", according to Jerez.

  • De cara a 2026, la ciudad va a intensificar su presencia en los principales foros turísticos internacionales. |

The provincial context has also been very positive. Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport exceeded 13.2 million arrivals in 2025, with growth of 7.2%. "This reinforces our international connectivity and the strength of key markets such as the United Kingdom, Spain and Germany, which are fundamental for Mijas", added the councillor.

In addition, forecasts for the first four months of 2026 point to a 6.2% increase in seat capacity at Málaga airport, exceeding 4.4 million. "This scenario requires us to continue planning to ensure that growth is orderly and compatible with the quality of life of our residents. Our objective is clear: to grow, yes, but with balance, quality and a vision for the future", concluded the councillor.
