Good news for Mijas: the municipality has once again been awarded the Blue Trail flag. This distinction is granted annually by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac) and, in Mijas’ case, is awarded to the Coastal Path.

The municipality has once again received this recognition, which highlights the commitment of municipalities and local authorities to restoring and preserving trails and routes that promote environmental education and the sustainable use of our natural surroundings.

Mijas has held this distinction since 2016, consistently meeting a series of indicators and criteria divided into four categories evaluated by the organisation: trail characteristics and layout; information, signage and infrastructure; conservation and management of natural and cultural heritage; and public use of the trails.

The Mijas Coastal Path is a pedestrian and cycle route that runs parallel to the Mediterranean from La Cala to the municipal boundary of Marbella. In addition to being a key link, it offers great scenic value, allowing visitors to learn about the characteristics of the fauna and flora of the area through the information panels located at various points along the route.

Requirements

In this regard, the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), recalled some of the criteria that the ADEAC considers when awarding and renewing these distinctions. These include accessibility, the presence of information panels, the promotion of educational and environmental awareness activities, and the protection of underwater biodiversity.

  • Según el consistorio, Mijas cuenta con todos los criterios que son analizados para obtener esta distinción. |

“We more than meet all the standards analysed to obtain this distinction. This is the result of everyone’s hard work, as we are committed 365 days a year to maintaining the best possible facilities”, the councillor stated.

Environmental commitment

The Blue Trail programme rewards and recognises the conservation and restoration of paths and trails that have been transformed into valuable resources for environmental interpretation and education, as well as for sustainable recreation, sport, and tourism in the natural environment.

Blue Trails is an exclusive international initiative of the ADEAC, which was launched in 2011 as a pilot programme for twelve educational coastal trails that uniquely linked Blue Flag beaches. Over the last decade, it has been supported by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition.

The association is also responsible for other programmes such as Blue Flag, Eco-Schools, Young Reporters for the Environment and Green Key. It should be noted that the municipality currently holds five Blue Flags for its beaches and a Blue Centre certification for the Torreón in La Cala.
