The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), announced on Friday 13th the establishment of the 'Mijas, alma andaluza' (Mijas, Andalusian Soul) awards, which the Town Hall will present to individuals and groups who have made an outstanding contribution to the municipality on the 28th of February, at an institutional ceremony at the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas, to mark the celebration of Andalusia Day.
These awards, which will be presented annually, were created with the aim of publicly recognising individuals, organisations, groups and initiatives that stand out for their contribution to the municipality and for embodying the values, traditions and spirit of Andalusia", said the mayoress.
The winners are CP Mijas Patinaje (Sport category); Carlos Caravias (Culture); Idiliq Group (Business); Marcel Lunar (Community Spirit); Alba Aragón (Youth), and the Mayordomos de San Antón Association (Tradition).
Reasons for the awards
These names were chosen by the evaluation committee created for this purpose, chaired by the mayoress and composed of nine councillors from the government team, plus the secretary, which met on the 9th of February.
CP Mijas Patinaje
This committee based its decision to honour CP Mijas Patinaje "on its particularly significant sporting, educational and social work, currently involving 39 girls and promoting essential values such as effort, perseverance and discipline".

The mayoress stressed that all these individuals and institutions "have demonstrated their remarkable commitment to Mijas and Andalusia in their respective areas of activity, and for this reason, we are proud to honour them on the 28th of February".
Mijas, "part of Andalusia's success’
The mayoress explained that Mijas is today "part of Andalusia's success, which is a land that exemplifies progress, equality and solidarity in Spain", which is why the Town Hall has created these awards.
These awards are governed by the provisions of Articles 1 and 7 of the Mijas Town Hall's Regulations on Honours and Distinctions, explained Mata.
Medal of the Town
Finally, the mayoress also announced that she has proposed to the Full Council that the Medal of the Town be awarded to the Brotherhood Dulce Nombre de Jesús Nazareno, which has been actively involved in the life of Mijas for four centuries.
"This proposal is justified by the fact that the brotherhood is the repository of collective memory, traditions, symbols and practices that have shaped the local identity. In addition, it maintains a high level of cultural activity in the municipality", she explained.

In this regard, Mata recalled that the brotherhood has contributed to cultural revitalisation by reviving and organising popular traditions, such as the Night of San Juan; creating the first nativity scene organised by a brotherhood in Mijas; promoting the Living Nativity Scene; organising theatrical performances and community events; and actively participating in the conservation and restoration of artistic and devotional heritage.
