The Mijas Town Hall has put out to public tender the drafting of the remodelling project for the Las Lagunas Active Participation Centre. The aim of this initiative is to gain space by redistributing the existing areas, as well as making the centre more accessible and user-friendly. The tender for this project has a budget of 60,000 euros.

The centre is located on a 2,233-square-metre plot classified as consolidated urban land with a public facility rating. The current facilities date back to 1986, so the project aims to completely refurbish the spaces, which will be expanded, as the facilities have become obsolete and there are many users. Almost 3,500 people currently use the facilities.

Comprehensive refurbishment

The refurbishment will connect the interior courtyard with the garden area to encourage use, relaxation and enjoyment, as well as improve conditions for the activities carried out at the centre, with workshops and outdoor multi-purpose rooms.

According to the councillor for Senior Citizens, Silvia Marín (PP), “as soon as the 2026 budget comes into force, the drafting of the project will be put out to tender in order to adapt this space to the needs of our elderly residents. We have many activities spread out, even in other facilities such as Las Cañadas. Here we have a very large space, but it is old and currently underused. The needs of the elderly are increasing, so it is appropriate to improve these facilities”.

The aim is to make the centre efficient by integrating energy, structural systems, climate control, natural light, water and space management, as well as implementing measures to improve user comfort. The building will also be accessible both internally and externally, and the installation of a lift is being considered. “We want to create more multi-purpose rooms, dance and games rooms, and spaces for activities and workshops. This will provide suitable facilities for these purposes”, added the councillor.

Active participation centres, also known as senior citizens’ day centres, offer a range of activities, with the fundamental aim of meeting the recreational needs of older people, as well as providing a socio-cultural framework where they can satisfy their thirst for information and knowledge. Recreational activities are organised on a daily basis, either directly by the Senior Citizens’ Department or at the initiative of the various retirees’ associations, always with the relevant information provided to the technical team.

More services

“The Las Lagunas centre has 3,480 users, which means that the current facilities have become too small. Hence the importance of this refurbishment project to gain space and offer a greater number of workshops and services to our senior citizens”, said the head of the Senior Citizens Department.

There are currently three centres in the municipality of Mijas, one for each urban centre.
