The battering of the raging sea during the storms that have hit Mijas throughout the past month caused damage to the base of the coastal path at El Capricho last week. This particularly deteriorated section will need to be partially dismantled and re-piled, according to a report by the Infrastructure Department drawn up at the request of the Beaches Department.

The report confirms that the constant pounding of the waves has eroded the sand protection that isolated the piles supporting the wooden structure running parallel to the beach. During the inspection, a landslide was observed, which caused the piles to lose sufficient support, leaving the walkway partially suspended. The path has been closed and protected since the first storm to prevent accidents.

 

The landslide has also caused partial subsidence in the breakwater wall bordering the green area of the residential development adjacent to this section of the Coastal Path. Given the damage caused by the force of the sea, the report concludes that the most appropriate solution is to dismantle the wooden walkway, stabilise the ground beneath it, and re-pile it to at least one metre below sea level.

 

Inspection

After the new piling, protection with riprap below the sand level will need to be undertaken. The company that originally built the section, Xardinor, has visited the affected area at the request of the Beaches Department to collaborate on assessing the damage. On Monday 2nd of February, a new on-site inspection was carried out to advance the repair plan.

 

The councillor responsible, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), explained that after the base has been reinforced, the wooden structure, decking, railings and bench will be reassembled; the upper rows of the existing breakwater wall will be restored; and the fencing around the green area will be replaced.
