  • Toñi Barranquero, presidenta de los mayordomos de Mijas.

The stewards of San Antón are already busy with the preparations. This year, they will be offering tripe and fritters

On the 17th of January, weather permitting, San Antón will once again be celebrated in Mijas, "a deeply rooted festivity with many years of history. In the past, people from the countryside would visit the saint to ask him to look after their animals so they would remain healthy and productive throughout the year. Today, the celebration has become more popular, and domestic pets and companion animals are also blessed", explained Toñi Barranquero, president of the San Antón stewards.

  • Muchos vecinos de la localidad, incluso de fuera de ella, han llevado a sus mascotas para que reciban la bendición.

Barranquero emphasised that the tradition has been preserved thanks to the local community passing it down through generations: “That’s the secret. My father was president of the stewards for many years, my grandparents were involved too, and my daughters help wherever they can. That’s why it hasn’t been lost".

  • El padre Hermán Marcel Lunar ofició esta liturgia.

On Saturday morning, the famous conch shell is blown to alert the community, at 11:30 hours the bells ring, followed by Mass at noon, a singing circle in front of the chapel, and the priest blessing the animals. In short, it ise a day to enjoy this long-standing tradition, share time with neighbours, and savour a delicious plate of tripe. "In the old days, every household ate tripe on San Antón’s Day. Later, when the church was renovated and the bar built, it was suggested that this traditional dish be prepared so neighbours could try it too", explained the president.

  • Una de las tradiciones más vistosa y alegre de esta celebración es la rueda.

Another tradition involves throwing a small stone at the saint to find a partner. “No one knows when this began, but it continues today. Many young people come to throw a stone to attract a partner. Originally, only women threw the stones as a way to overcome shyness, but now anyone can participate", she explained

To close the celebrations, the president confirmed there will be fritters.
