The rural roads of Mijas are returning to normal after the recent rains, although work is still being carried. This was confirmed on Tuesday by the councillor responsible for this department at the Mijas Town Hall, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), who pointed out that the two red alerts on the 27th of December and the 4th of January did not cause major damage to Mijas' dirt roads, and any issues that did occur have been addressed in recent days
An example of this can be seen on Camino Gamonal, next to the Ojén River, where the wet ground has caused several eucalyptus trees to slide down the slope in the last week. "These operations are complicated because it is necessary to enter the river to remove the tree, but we understand that they are urgent tasks, as in the event of further rainfall, it would make matters much more difficult and put the area at risk", explained the councillor.

Another area where urgent action was taken is the zone known as El Pantanillo, near the La Cala Resort housing development, "where the water washed away the concrete that was over this stream, leaving it exposed, with the potential danger this poses for heavy vehicles passing through. So we have quickly filled them with earth", said Belmonte, "and we have done something similar in the Los Toros stream".

The roads adjacent to the Gomenaro River and Arroyo Seco have also been repaired in the same way, as some sections lost up to two metres in width due to the force of the water. In this regard, the councillor took the opportunity to appeal to the public, "because we understand that for all residents their road may seem the most urgent, but repairs are carried out on a priority basis, focusing especially on blocked roads where cars cannot pass", he specified, adding that "it is true that there are still many potholes and ruts, but those that are impassable will always be dealt with first".

The councillor also stressed that serious damage, such as severe flooding, has been avoided in all these areas thanks to the road maintenance and stream clearing work carried out throughout the year. "Thanks to this, we have not had to deal with serious flooding, we have not had to build reed dams, because of the work carried out over all this time", he said.

Finally, Belmonte reminded residents of Mijas that they can report any incidents on the municipality's rural roads through the Gecor application, "and depending on the priority and availability of machinery, we will act as soon as possible. In fact, we are attending to incidents practically on the same day", he said.
