According to data provided last month by the Andalusian Employment Service (SAE), there are 5,524 people unemployed in Mijas, representing 5.03% of the total unemployment recorded in the province of Málaga. In terms of the year-on-year change, there are 417 fewer unemployed people in the municipality than in December 2024, reflecting a 7.02% decrease.
For the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), the figures demosntrate the "economic growth that the municipality is experiencing", which is also reflected in the 2026 budget with an increase in revenue. In this regard, the mayoress stated that "these figures are excellent news for Mijas and its residents, as well as an incentive to continue working for the well-being of our neighbours", and stressed that "we are committed to promoting initiatives that encourage employment, a commitment we consider essential".
For his part, the councillor for Employment Promotion, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), stated that "the data supports the strategy being implemented by the municipality in terms of employment" and highlighted that "the main drivers and guarantors of these positive figures are business owners".
Maldonado also stressed that "at the Employment Pormotion Department, we have broken the traditional paradigm of training and, above all, job placement, putting the business world at the centre of all our initiatives through programmes such as Nexo and Puente al Comercio, alongside the support of public-private partnerships, which helps generate confidence in the municipality, its institutions, and the Town Hall".
In this regard, the councillor explained that "we are seeing how traditional job-placement training, despite the difficulties involved in co-financing or wage equalisation, severely limits the municipality’s budgetary possibilities under Chapter One". He added that "historically, this Town Hall has not implemented quality plans that would allow us to provide professional certification in activities that are recognised and prioritised by the Junta de Andalucía".
In summary, Maldonado said, "there are a range of challenges that we have been able to address by working closely with local businesses, and fortunately, our approach is yielding positive results as reflected in these figures".
On another note, he announced that on 23 January a training course will be offered for unemployed residents of Mijas: "In collaboration with the Malaga Provincial Council, the initiative will take place at the Las Lagunas Training and Employment building, providing tools such as AI to assist in job searching. In short, we will seek public-private partnerships and any other opportunities that help facilitate employment for the people of Mijas".
