In Mijas, around 30% of the new bins have been installed as part of a new campaign to promote recycling that began in the summer

The municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol have significantly increased selective collection, that is, the recycling of light packaging and paper/cardboard, in 2025. The Costa del Sol Environmental Complex, owned by the 'Mancomunidad de Municipios' (Association of Municipalities) and managed by Urbaser, received a total of 16,003 tonnes of packaging in 2025, compared to 15,494 tonnes the previous year, representing an increase of 3.29%. as for paper and cardboard, there was an increase of 7.4% in 2025.

Assessment

The president of the Mancomunidad, Manuel Cardeña, points out that "these annual increases show that residents are increasingly separating and sorting their waste more effectively, therby increasing selective collection rates. These figures are clear indicators of the consumption habits of our neighbours and reflect that the Costa del Sol maintains optimal levels of recycling".

Furthermore, the Mancomunidad has already installed 28% of the new containers it plans to distribute across the eleven municipalities in the region, the implementation of which began at the end of the summer and forms part of a strategy to promote recycling. In the case of Mijas, 36% of the planned blue bins and 35% of the yellow bins are already in place.
