The council deployed the Fire Brigade, Civil Protection and Local Police during this storm, which resulted in many incidents but no serious damage

The weather system caused by Storm Francis, which hit the Costa del Sol on Sunday 4th, forced the Mijas Town Hall to deploy a special security, surveillance and response team of more than forty people, who worked on the ground to prevent serious consequences for the population, animals and property. On Monday 5th, the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), took stock of a difficult few hours with the councillors from the areas involved and highlighted that there were no serious personal injuries or material damage to report. “We have been very vigilant. Yesterday [Sunday 4th], as mayoress, I also had a meeting with all the mayors, both from the province of Cádiz and from Málaga, to assess the state of the different rivers and the extent to which they could overflow”, explained the mayoress.

Mata recalled that the Municipal Emergency Plan was activated at around 8 hours on Sunday, when Andalusian Emergency Services 112 raised the Regional Plan to operational emergency phase 1. It should be noted that the Aemet red alert was issued at 14:30 hours. The Mijas Town Hall opened the Las Cañadas sports centre to accommodate people who might have needed to be evacuated from their homes, but this was not necessary.

Coordinated work

Mata praised the work of the personnel involved in the emergency plan: “Thanks to their work, nothing serious has happened”, said the mayoress, accompanied by the councillors for Local Police, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox); Operational Services and Parks and Gardens, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP); Fire Brigade and Civil Protection, Francisco Jerez (Vox), and Livestock and Street Cleaning, Eloy Belmonte (Vox).

Several incidents

Due to Storm Francis, among other incidents, there were several interventions due to fallen trees, which affected public roads and posed a risk to traffic, as well as others due to the collapse of pergolas and marquees. It is also worth noting the damage caused to a section of the Coastal Path in the El Capricho area by the force of the sea and landslides on the Mijas-Benalmádena road.
