Acosol will launch a plan to increase production and use of reclaimed water

The public water company Acosol announced this week that it has awarded a contract to develop a new plan to increase the production capacity of reclaimed water at up to six treatment plants on the Costa del Sol, including the Cerros del Águila plant in Mijas, and to promote its wider use. The successful bidder will have until the end of May to implement the plan, with an investment of just over 30,000 euros.

According to the CEO of Acosol in Mijas, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), the initiative aims to preserve the water in local reservoirs, aquifers and desalination plants for human consumption. “It is true that the recent rains have filled the coastal reservoirs considerably, but we cannot forget the years of severe drought we have endured, the growing population and the fact that supplies are dwindling, which is why measures must be put in place to encourage greater use of reclaimed water in our daily lives”, he said.

The public water company reports that in 2024, 51 cubic hectometres of reclaimed water were produced across the various treatment plants, but only 12.4 per cent of this resource was actually used. “It is a shame that, after so much effort and going through a treatment process, this water ends up being discharged into the sea”, Gómez Teruel added.

Currently, reclaimed water is mainly used to irrigate golf courses, but it could also be applied in municipal gardens and green areas, as well as for washing and cleaning public roads, he said. “It would also save the municipality money, as reclaimed water is much cheaper than regular drinking water, which we currently have to use for irrigation due to legislation. This is one of the areas we are working on, because we must try to ensure that reclaimed water can also be used for street cleaning, waste container washing, and other tasks”.
