The Mijas Pueblo Tourist Office changes its exhibition at the beginning of each month. In November, it is the turn of artisans Teresa Madueño with her prints and engravings and Liana Popa with her jewellery. They are responsible for showcasing the best of local craftsmanship. Visitors can now enjoy a small selection of the work of these two talented female artisans from Mijas, who once again demonstrate the high standard and quality of the pieces they create.
These municipal offices collaborate with the Mijas Craft Association to raise awareness of, promote and showcase local artisans by featuring a different artist from this collective each month. According to the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), "this room existed but was not being used to its full potential. What's more, here we promote Mijas artists and artisans. Many people come here asking for information, maps and plans, and they find a sample of the best of Mijas. It has become a meeting place, a fusion open to the public. We also always invite visitors to see the artists’ workplaces and buy the pieces they like".
Madueño
This month features the work of Teresa Madueño, who presents a selection of engravings with marine themes, bulls and streets of Mijas. She also demonstrates another technique, stamping, to create unique, customisable and handmade hand-held Spanish fans. According to Madueño, "I started many years ago with engravings and different themes. But I am a restless artist and I have continued to research and learn new techniques, which is how I came to printing".
Popa
The other artisan is Liana Popa, a long-time resident of Mijas. Like Teresa, she can also be found at the Wednesday craft market in the Virgen de la Peña square. Liana offers two proposals, scarf necklaces and bracelets, all made with the skill and patience of hands that take pleasure in craftsmanship. According to Popa, "I have been in the world of crafts since 2013. I work with both jewellery and leather goods. Here I have brought a sample of my bracelets, handmade piece by piece, and my scarf necklace creation, which I want everyone to see".
