Friday, 7th and Saturday, 8th were the days to collaborate with Bancosol's Great Food Drive, a well-established national donation campaign that every year reaches supermarkets and large stores asking for a small contribution to help families at risk of social exclusion.

In Mijas, more than 20 establishments participated. There, campaign volunteers provided information at the entrance to supermarkets so that residents could make their donations when passing through the checkout. This was the case for Víctor Morales and Rosa María Martín, who spent Friday morning volunteering at Carrefour in Las Lagunas. Morales said: "Here I am for another year helping Bancosol with the Great Food Drive". Martín added that "there are lots of volunteers in all the participating supermarkets. We have covered 20 establishments with two volunteers on each shift. We have received our training and this year the Sembrando Sonrisas association is in charge of organising us".

Since 2020, donations have been monetary, allowing the purchase of the most in-demand food and products on each occasion. According to Martín, "Bancosol saw that this was the best way to provide fresh products such as meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and eggs. People always bought the same things and we couldn't deliver varied and healthy baskets. That's why we now ask for donations at the checkout".

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor for Social Inclusion, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), visited a supermarket on Friday morning to kick off the campaign in Mijas and ask for everyone's collaboration. Mata thanked "all the volunteers for their collaboration throughout the weekend, dedicating their time and effort". She also encouraged all residents to get involved. "If we all work together, no family will have to suffer or go without. That is our commitment to the society in which we live", she added.

Help provided

According to data provided by Bancosol, 762 people are being helped in Mijas, 286 of whom are children. By the end of September, more than 74,000 kilos of food had been distributed to these people, who are going through a difficult time in their lives. Christmas is just around the corner and, with everyone's help, Bancosol will ensure that no family goes without food during this festive season.
