The gastronomic festival will run until November 2nd

El Torreón restaurant in La Cala has kicked off its Rice Week gastronomic event, held this year from the 27th of October to the 2nd of November. This gastronomic festival has been running 10 years, and on its first day it paid tribute to businessman Juan Rodríguez Gutiérrez. During the event, words of praise were spoken for both entrepreneurs, Juan and Salvador Gallardo. “We are very happy to start the week with a tribute to Juan Rodríguez. In fact, we are paying tribute to Juan and his entire family, to María who accompanies him. Juan is one of those people who has helped La Cala to grow”, said Gallardo, owner of El Torreón Restaurant.

Juan is “a great friend, both he and his wife, and his whole family is wonderful”, said Paqui Balaguer, a friend of the honouree. His values as a businessman were highlighted, something that Rodríguez and his family appreciated. “La Cala is a very welcoming town, it is ours. I have been here for more than half my life and I am very happy”, said businessman Juan Rodríguez.

“On behalf of my brothers, nephews, and children, I want to say that we are very proud of my father and my mother, who has been instrumental in my father's success, not only professionally but also personally”, said Nuria Rodríguez, daughter of the honoree.

A much-loved figure who represents the living history of La Cala, he and Salvador Gallardo received the thanks of the mayoress of Mijas. “I want to express my gratitude. This event is held every year, and we are thankful that there is a restaurant in our area, in this case El Torreón de La Cala de Mijas, that organizes this type of event for the residents who, through their contributions, have made our municipality great”, said Ana Mata (PP), mayoress of Mijas, who did not want to miss the opening of this Rice Week.

“He is a great person and a great family man, and he has contributed greatly to many events here in La Cala, where he has collaborated whenever he has been asked”, said Silvia Marín (PP), councilor for the Mijas Town Hall.

First day of Rice Week

“Just two weeks ago, I presented Rice Week here in La Cala, at El Torreón, and we have been supporting this type of initiative which, although private, needs to be promoted because every year it pays tribute to an important figure”, said Francisco Jerez (Vox), councilor for Tourism.

“Rice Week is a hallmark of our identity, but I would also like to highlight the loyalty El Torreon has shown to its employees. The way it treats its human resources, the quality of the services they provide..., so congratulations on this achievement”, said Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), councilor for Economic Development.

During these days, you can enjoy ‘ciego’ rice with seafood, surf and turf rice, black rice, 'caldoso' rice with fish and seafood, rice with oxtail, rice with octopus and prawns, and the chef's rice with clams, mushrooms, chicken, and prawns, all accompanied by Delicias del Torreón.

“I am proud to be here and enjoy this moment, and I think it is very important to give visibility and recognition to people who, through their career or human values, deserve everything that is done for them”, said Natalia Martínez, councilor for the PSOE in Mijas. For his part, José Carlos Martín, spokesperson for Cs Mijas, made two points: “On the one hand, I would like to congratulate Salvador and El Torreón, which has consolidated this gastronomic event, aimed at ensuring that we all enjoy ourselves, and, on the other hand, I would like to recognise these people for their long careers".
