The La Cala Lions Club is organising a new edition of its popular ‘Move Against Diabetes’ walk, which will take place on the 2nd of November along the Coastal Path. In addition, the Lions have arranged a full day of festivities and awareness-raising activities to collect funds for their diabetes prevention group.

To mark World Diabetes Day, celebrated annually on the 14th of November, the club is organising the seventh edition of this walkathon to combat the disease and promote healthy living. The walk will start at 10:00 hours. It will cover a 2.5 km route along the path, followed by a large health festival featuring information stands, free glucose testing, stalls, musical performances, Zumba, batucada, and a market.

According to Mercy Chapman, one of the club’s volunteers, “we are organising this walk again because many people still do not know they have high blood sugar and have nerver had a glucose test. We invite everyone to attend this event to raise funds so the Lions can continue offering free tests. Any donation is welcome. Diabetes is a silent disease but can affect many parts of the body, such as the heart, eyes, legs, etc”.

The event is being organised in collaboration with the Foreigners and Sports Departments, with the aim of raising funds for the free glucose prevention and monitoring work carried out by the club’s diabetes support group.

The councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP), stated that “the Town Hall is once again collaborating with the club, which is very active in diabetes detection. They carry out free glucose tests and, by organising this walk, they also raise awareness about this hidden and silent disease”.

The club conducts glucose tests on the last Wednesday and Saturday of each month during the charity market held in front of the La Cala Branch Office, as well as in some establishments in the area.

World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day was established in 1991 by the World Health Organisation and the International Diabetes Federation in response to growing concern about the increasing health threat posed by this disease. As every year, events are organised to highlight its importance. This day, November 14th, was chosen because it is the birthday of Frederick Banting, who, together with Charles Best, discovered insulin in 1922.
