Mijas has been awarded the Ecovidrio 2025 Green Flag, placing it at the top of the national rankings ahead of 180 other coastal municipalities in Spain participating in the Green Flag Movement. With a total of 6,586 points, the municipality has not only taken first place in Andalusia, but has also far exceeded last year’s results, achieving a score 53% higher than that of the 2024 winner, which obtained 4,297 points.
In this year’s edition, in which more than 180 municipalities from across Spain participated, “Mijas stood out for its high level of involvement, the quality of its awareness-raising actions and the response of its hospitality sector, becoming a national benchmark for sustainability and environmental management”, said the councillor for Street Cleaning, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), on Monday 20th.
30,000 kilos more than in 2024
The councillor stressed that this recognition “is the result of the joint work of hoteliers, residents and the various municipal departments, which have made it possible for Mijas to be today an example of commitment to recycling and caring for the environment”.
The councillor recalled that, during July and August, 541,856 kilos of glass were collected, which is 30,000 kilos more than in the same period in 2024 and almost 60,000 more than in 2023. This increase, together with the high level of participation from the hospitality sector, “has been decisive in achieving first place nationwide, despite the general downward trend across the country”, he said.
Similarly, Belmonte explained that the amount of glass collected during this period represents a saving of more than 70,000 euros for the municipal coffers, “which, otherwise, would have had to be paid by the residents of Mijas, due to the waste disposal tax that the municipality must pay if that glass had been deposited in the general waste containers”.

Belmonte expressed special thanks to the hoteliers for their daily efforts, as well as to the various local associations and groups that actively collaborated in the campaign, including the taxi drivers’ associations, the municipal fleet, the cleaning fleet and the street cleaning staff. “Mijas has demonstrated that when we work together with unity and responsibility, we can achieve results that transcend borders”, he said.
The campaign featured an extensive and integrated range of communication actions, with advertising on billboards, bus shelters, buses, digital screens and in the media, as well as at local events such as the La Cala Fair and the Mijas Unión Basket Summer League. It was also consistently promoted on municipal channels and social media, achieving widespread involvement among residents.
The councillor for Street Cleaning added that “Mijas reinforces its position as an exemplary municipality in cleanliness and collective responsibility” and demosntrates that “constant work and everyone’s involvement are the best guarantee for maintaining a cleaner, tidier municipality that is committed to its environment”. Belmonte also pointed out that “this recognition is not just an honour, it is confirmation that in Mijas things succeed when we work with rigour, proximity and common sense. This success belongs to all the people of Mijas”.
