Eleven months after the devastating floods caused by the DANA, Carol García's Art Academy in Paiporta (Valencia) has risen again as a symbol of resilience and creativity. This weekend, a delegation of members of Soroptimist International Costa del Sol visited the newly reopened business to witness the success of the 'Soroptimist by your side' programme, created to support women rebuilding their lives and businesses after the disaster.
During the visit, attended also by Paiporta town councillors José Antonio Redondo Gutiérrez and Miguel Ángel Ortiz Linares, the project's approach was discussed. Its methodology has been simple but effective: offering attentive listening, encouragement and direct financial support without unnecessary bureucrecy, requiring only a few photos of the damage and an invoice to expedite the aid.
As a symbol of this collaboration, a display explaining the project hangs in the academy, which has now received its long-awaited ceramic kiln and has been transformed into a welcoming space for children and adults.
Master class
The visit also marked the start of a new artistic collaboration. Soroptimist has connected the academy with José Ángel Ruiz González, master ceramist from Alfajar Gallery in Malaga, who will support Carol by giving a masterclass at her premises.
Aura Roderick, from Soroptimist International Costa del Sol, wanted to focus on the real heroes of the recovery. "The true credit belongs to these extraordinary women", said Roderick. "Their resilience, gratitude and determination to overcome challenges inspire us all. It is an honour to walk alongside them", she said.
The club remains committed to its work and encourages those interested to get in touch via email at soroptimist.costadelsol@gmail.com or through their website.
