It consists of keeping a form with your medical history in a bottle so that, in the event of an emergency, the services attending can access this information

Use in case of emergency: this is the aim of the campaign presented on Tuesday 30th of September by the Lions Club of La Cala and the Mijas Foreigners Department at the La Cala Branch Office. According to representatives of the organisation, five million people in the United Kingdom already use this method. The programme, ‘Message in a Bottle’, is designed to help save lives.

"The idea is that if someone falls ill, especially those who live alone and need help but have difficulty communicating, either because of language or their condition, emergency services (firefighters, police, medical staff, etc.) arriving at their home can have information to know what medical issue they may have", explained the  former international director of the Lions Club, Luis Domínguez,

The system is very simple: fill in a form with your medical history, for example, any illnesses that require treatment, such as diabetes or heart conditions, or any allergies, and place it in a sealed bottle, then keep it in the fridge so that when emergency services arrive, they can act more quickly and have this vital information at hand.

Why the fridge? "Because everyone usually has a fridge at home. A the second sticker is placed on the fridge door, as there may be two or three fridges in the house", said Domínguez. And how do the emergency services know the bottle is in the fridge? "It's simple, a sticker from the project is placed on the front of the house, so when the emergency services arrive, they know there is a bottle with a message inside the fridge", added the Lions Club representative.

Goal: saving lives

The councillor responsible for the Foreigners Department, Mario Bravo (PP), who also attended the press conference, said that "this gives people peace of mind. Many live alone or do not speak the language, making it very difficult to explain their situation. That is why the Mijas Town Hall supports this initiative, and we want to congratulate the Lions Club of La Cala for introducing it here".

The aim of the ‘Message in a Bottle’ project is to help save lives. The Lions Club provides this kit to all residents and encourages people to join the programme. Where or how can we get one of these bottles? "As you know, the Lions Club runs three shops open to the public where anyone interested can get more information and, if necessary, obtain a bottle. It is hermetically sealed and can be kept in the fridge containing all your medical information", said Bravo.

Those wishing to obtain an emergency bottle can also contact the Lions Club of La Cala by phone on 607 879 450.
