A fire broke out at midday on Monday, 22nd of September, in the Lomas del Flamenco area. Technically, it was a small blaze, as the area affected was around 5,000 square metres, less than a hectare. The fire, which affected scrubland and grass, was extinguished thanks to the prompt action of the Mijas Fire Brigade. The councillor for the department, Francisco Jerez (Vox) described the incident as “nothing more than a scare". He explained, “We were lucky that it is a hill surrounded by a fairly wide dirt track”, adding that this allowed the crews “to keep it under control".
Until after 14 hours, the Mijas Fire Brigade continued to douse the area to prevent the fire from “flaring up again due to the wind", Jerez stressed. Although Infoca also went to the affected area, "given the situation, they turned back. Even a helicopter came and flew over the area, saw that it was under control, and it returned to base", explained the councillor.
The operation involved coordination between Mijas Fire Brigade, Local Police, and Operational Services. The councillor for the latter department was also present in the early afternoon at the site of the fire. "We are coordinated and always work hand in hand with the Fire Brigade and Local Police, as Mijas is, unfortunately, a municipality with hotspots where small fires frequently occur", said Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), councillor for the area. "We needed a supply of water”, he continued, “so we provided a water tanker to the two fire engines to ensure the area was fully extinguished and to guarantee residents’ safety".

Extreme caution
The Mijas Town Hall reminded residents that precautions must still be taken. According Jerez, "the countryside is still very dry. Today there is a slight wind, which is worrying because a gust of wind can lift the flames. We are still in a high-risk period and precautions must be maintained 100%, just as in August".
Even though September is almost over, “there is still a lot of fuel, a lot of grass, due to a rainy spring”, added Gómez Teruel. The Town Hall is clear: “We must remain vigilant and prepared, because in the event of any fire we need to act quickly”, he concluded.
