On Thursday 7th, we visited the sanitation and rainwater drainage works currently underway on Calle Verónica and the surrounding area in Las Lagunas. The project involves crossing the motorway using the pipe jacking method, which consists of horizontal drilling with steel pipes to create passages beneath infrastructure without disrupting traffic at any time. The councillor for Infrastructures and Works at the Mijas Town Hall, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), explained that “a shaft is dug on one side of the motorway to insert the tunnel boring machine that passes the pipes through. On the other side of the motorway, near the La Palma bar, another shaft is dug, where the sewerage and rainwater pipes will be connected to the existing network”.

The purpose of the project is to install two pipes for the drainage of sewage and rainwater, with diameters of 1000 and 800 millimetres respectively, connecting them downstream to the existing framework and urban networks currently in service. This area required intervention due to several existing problems. As Torres Trella explains, “in this area we have a problem with rainwater accumulation, and because the sewage and rainwater systems are combined, we also face health concerns. This new construction involves, firstly, the separation of the sewage and rainwater systems, and secondly, the connection to the existing sewage network. Eventually, it will be linked to the so-called storm tank”.

The work was scheduled to take three months, but it had to be halted during August. “We encountered compact, hard rock during excavation, which means the work will be paused until September. After that, a manual construction method will be used to remove the rock, adding approximately three more months to the project timeline. The cost will not change; it remains approximately 1.090.000 euros”, added the councillor. The project also includes the renovation of the upper part of the square on Calle Verónica, as well as works on the other side of the motorway near the La Palma bar, and on San Bartolomé and San Bernardo streets.
