The sun safety campaign 'Mójate con tu piel' comes to an end

  • Los jóvenes que participan en la campaña han recibido una charla informativa sobre la fotoprotección.

The Youth Department successfully concludes the youth campaign on sun protection, ‘Mójate con tu piel’, held at AquaMijas

There’s no excuse for leaving the house without sun protection. With this message in mind, the Youth Department of the Mijas Town Hall launched a summer awareness campaign entitled ‘Mójate con tu piel’ (Dive in with your skin). The initiative, which concluded on the 6th, aimed to raise public awareness about the effects of sun exposure on the skin. It was held at the AquaMijas water park, in collaboration with experts in the field and the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC).

“Young people have been very engaged and are walking away with an important lesson”, said the councillor for the area, Melisa Ceballos (PP), who attended the closing session. The young people taking part in the campaign, aged between 14 and 35 and who had signed up in advance, attended an informative talk on sun protection and also took part in a series of activities. They then enjoyed a full day at AquaMijas.

  • Los expertos recomienda especial atención a niños y personas mayores.

“Our main advice is to never lose sight of the fact that the sun is always there, that ultraviolet radiation causes skin cancer and that the best way to protect ourselves is to know that we have to use sunscreen all year round, as a routine, and not just during the summer, although we should use more in summer. Protect children and the elderly in particular, and bear in mind that if we use sunscreen all year round, it will be easier to get used to it in summer because it will be part of our daily routine”, insisted the head of Prevention and Health Promotion at the AECC, Elena Ybarra.

  • Cada vez más jóvenes incluyen la fotoprotección en su rutina ‘skinker’.

Tips for your skin

Premature ageing, spots and skin cancer are the problems that the sun can cause on unprotected skin or when exposed at times when it is not recommended. In fact, scientific data points to a 40 per cent increase in the incidence of skin cancer in the last five years. “Our families weren’t aware and didn’t put sunscreen on us, which is why it’s important to protect yourself”, added pharmacist Aixa Galán from the Mare Nostrum pharmacy in La Cala de Mijas.

When it comes to skin protection, experts point out that many myths still circulate today that need to be debunked. Another fact to bear in mind: “Twenty-five per cent of solar radiation is received during childhood and is closely linked to future cases of melanoma”, Galán pointed out.

Committed and aware youth

Initially, Youth had planned two rounds of the campaign, “but we had to extend it to a third due to its great success”, said the councillor Melisa Ceballos. “Thanks to the campaign, we have even gained two new members for the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), and it’s wonderful to see how young people are getting involved in the cause”, added Ceballos. Young women Nerea Cuevas and Nuria Blanco are now part of the large AECC family, having joined after taking part in the ‘Mójate con tu piel’ campaign and becoming more aware of the cause.
