The water quality plan of the 'Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental' (Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol), with an investment of 635,000 euros, has released its first figures on waste dumped into the sea. Plastic remains the most collected type of rubbish along the coast, reaching a total of 40.48 cubic metres in July, compared to 33.36 cubic metres collected the previous month. There has also been a notable increase in seaweed, wood, and organic matter.
The municipality that recorded the highest volume of waste was Estepona (10.05 m³), followed by Marbella (8.41 m³) and Mijas (5.90 m³). According to the Association, waste collected on the beaches of Mijas mainly consisted of plastic, logs, reeds and organic food waste. The supramunicipal body also pointed out that the increase in waste compared to June is due to higher activity on the beaches.
The sea cleaning service will continue until September, with a total of 15 boats, 4 coastal vessels and 11 beach boats, tasked with collecting floating or semi-submerged solid waste, as well as hydrocarbons and oily substances. The cost of the operation is covered by the Association (60%) and the local municipalities (40%).
