On Tuesday 5th of August, the councillor for Economic Development and Employment Promotion, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), gave his assessment of the July unemployment figures in Mijas, which recorded the lowest unemployment rate in the last 17 years (5,369 unemployed), specifically since December 2008. "The truth is that the data is encouraging. Above all, we must thank the business community, the self-employed and entrepreneurs, as they are the real driving force behind job creation", said Maldonado.

 

Among other factors, Maldonado pointed out that programmes such as Nexo and the job fairs promoted by the Town Hall itself have contributed to these figures: "They have ensured that this public-private partnership provides our job seekers with a connection to the labour market", adding that "there is no doubt these public-private initiatives by the Town Hall through the Nexo programme have also helped to boost the labour market".

 

He also highlighted the training programmes promoted by the Town Hall to improve employability. "What we are doing through the quality system we are implementing in the Employment Promotion Department is to seek new niches for job creation, prioritising training initiatives promoted by the Junta de Andalucía", such as training qualified personnel for the hospitality sector, home care, maintenance services and gardening, among others, explained Maldonado, concluding that ultimately "we will achieve our goal of continuing to add people to the labour market, with the year-on-year rate continuing to rise and the unemployment rate remaining negligible in our municipality".
