Swifts are extremely important for agriculture, human health and the maintenance of healthy biodiversity. Seeing them in our skies indicates that we have a healthy ecosystem. High temperatures negatively impact adult birds, which can become exhausted and dehydrated during heat waves. The morphological characteristics of these birds also prevent them from taking off from the ground, especially if their feathers are not yet fully developed or if they are weak.
In Mijas, the Environment Department has organised a talk and workshop on this subject, which will be given on Tuesday 22nd by veterinarian Silvia Montero. She will be responsible for training the general public and the volunteer group in particular, establishing what could become a network of contacts to whom the birds that arrive can be assigned, thus sharing the effort. The event will take place at 19:30 hours in the assembly hall of the La Cala de Mijas Branch Office, with free admission until full capacity is reached.
The Environment Department also reminds everyone that if you find a fallen bird, you should immediately call 112 or the local authorities so that it can be collected and cared for until fully recovered, as these migratory insectivorous birds are protected.
