New collaboration between Soroptimist International, the Mijas Red Cross and the Association Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo Tzoaini. On Tuesday 15th, the first group, comprising women committed to helping those most in need and with years of experience working alongside NGOs, once again donated food products worth two thousand euros to the Municipal Food Bank, with the Red Cross Mijas and Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo Tzoaini playing a major role. “We have been working with the Red Cross for over ten years, initially at Christmas, then during the pandemic, and now throughout the year. We get in touch with both organisations to find out approximately how many people they are helping, so we can calculate the amount of food to collect for the donation”, explained the president of Soroptimist International, Dafne Theunissen.
. They are well aware of the difficulties many people face, and these donations make a real difference in tough situations. Milk, oil, tuna... non-perishable products that will now be distributed by volunteers from the Red Cross and Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo. “We have received a very generous and much-needed donation from Soroptimist. They make this contribution every year and we are extremely grateful. They get in touch with us and ask what we need or which products are most in demand”, said the Red Cross Mijas volunteer, Sonia Aranda.
The Red Cross keeps a list of registered users with the Food Bank and responds to their needs in an organised way. On average, ten people collect essential items each day.
The councillor for Volunteering at the Mijas Town Hall, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), was present at the event and praised the initiative, noting that “all three associations are doing valuable work: Soroptimist with their donation, and the Red Cross and Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo by ensuring it reaches those most in need in the municipality”.

For her part, the president of the Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo Tzoani Association, Tamara Soto, expressed her gratitude: “We are very grateful, as this is not the first time the association has made donations to us. They support us two or three times a year and are always there for us, even at Christmas, when we collect gifts for the children”.
Soroptimist is also a global movement whose mission is to empower girls and women, offering them new opportunities. A group which, as Soto said, is always there for everything.
