Mijas now has around a hundred low-water-consumption areas

  • The Parks and Gardens Department has also started work in the area around the municipal swimming pool in La Cala
  • El concejal de Parques y Jardines ha informado este martes de esta actuación.

Xeriscaping work has recently been completed at the Riviera-Calahonda roundabout, next to the AP-7 motorway

Although the severe drought is now over, the Town Hall continues its efforts to save water. This year, the push buttons on the beach showers and footbaths operate for 15 seconds as a control measure, while public spaces have been modified to avoid the need for continuous watering, using sustainable materials.

In this regard, the Parks and Gardens Department, headed by the councillor Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), has spent the past two weeks working on the roundabout at the Riviera del Sol and Calahonda residential areaas, next to the AP-7 motorway, where xeriscaping has been carried out to beautify this entrance to the municipality. “We have been working on this roundabout for two weeks, which had not been attended to for some time, and it now looks very attractive. The neighbours are very grateful for this work”, said the councillor, who stressed the Town Hall’s commitment to gardens cultivated with highly ornamental, low-water plants.

“A design based on stones, pebbles and glass has been chosen, along with drought-tolerant plants such as oleanders, dwarf palms, agave and olive trees, the latter being the most distinctive tree we have in Andalusia”, explained Gómez Teruel.

The councillor highlighted the work carried out by his department, “led by Joaquín,  one of our gardeners on staff. We are fortunate to have professionals like him, who know how to create such beautiful spaces”.

Regarding the Town Hall’s investment in xeriscaping, the councillor assured that “it is much lower than previous expenditures on plants, as many materials used are recycled, such as glass for decoration, or inexpensive, such as white pebbles and gravel, as well as pine bark and volcanic rock, which are generally far cheaper than ground cover plants”.

In recent months, similar work has been carried out at various points across the municipality, including the roundabout leading to Calahonda. Other interventions have taken place on the roundabouts on the road up to Mijas Pueblo, on Calle Miguel Hernández, the entrance to La Cala from Marbella, Lagarejo, alongside  Pueblo Don Silverio, in the area known as Puerto de Mijas, at the fountains near the Teatro de Las Lagunas and in Plaza Virgen de la Peña. “When this government team took office, we began with the roundabout at the entrance to Mijas Pueblo, where we replaced the grass with pebbles and glass. Then we worked on Camino de Coín, La Cala, among other places”, he added, noting that “xeriscaping is now underway around the La Cala swimming pool, and we intend to continue along these lines, even though this has been a good year in terms of rainfall, we cannot let our guard down”.
