Mayors, councillors and technicians from municipalities in the Malaga metropolitan area participated on Thursday 17th in the ‘Malaga Global Metropolis’ Forum, promoted by the CIEDES Foundation as a platform for dialogue and decision-making at a supra-municipal level to address priority challenges jointly. This edition focused on education and training in Málaga. The president of the Malaga Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, said that “we must be aware of the importance of providing our young people with a quality education because the greatest challenge the province of Malaga currently faces is attracting companies that believe in and generate employment in different areas, such as agri-food, tourism, technology and culture. We have to ensure that our talent, generated by the University of Málaga and our education system, stays here”.

For his part, the Regional Delegate for Education at the Junta de Andalucía, Miguel Briones, stressed that “education must be understood as a lifelong project, it is permanent and continuous training, and higher education, from advanced vocational training to university studies, represents a significant commitment of the current Andalusian government”.
Mijas also featured prominently at the forum as one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Málaga. In terms of education, the new secondary school, IES Ana Camona Veleta, was highlighted as an example of innovative infrastructure. In this regard, the mayoress of the municipality, Ana Mata (PP), who attended the forum, commented that “Mijas has three large distinct districts, and growth is occurring mainly in Las Lagunas and La Cala”. The mayoress also praised the fact that this growth “has been accompanied by substantial investment from the Junta de Andalucía, under Juanma Moreno ’s leadership, through the new secondary school, which we were fortunate to inaugurate this year”.
Regarding the town centre of La Cala, an area of the municipality requiring new educational infrastructure, Mata reported that “the Town Hall has already transferred land in the La Cala expansion area, Cortijo Colorado, covering 7,000 square metres. This will enable the Junta de Andalucía to carry out a much-needed expansion project to accommodate all the children in our municipality and meet the growing demand for secondary school places”.
With the conclusions drawn from the data compiled by the Ciedes Foundation, the relevant institutions will work to meet the challenges identified at the forum.
