On Wednesday 2nd, the Mijas Town Hall held its plenary session for the month of June, during which it gave the green light to a budget amendment amounting to 2,550,353.16 euros. “With this third budget amendment, we aim to improve society in Mijas, as is our duty, and to do so with judgement and seriousness”, said the councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP), who was responsible for defending the proposal, which was approved with votes in favour from the government team, against from Ciudadanos and with the PSOE abstaining.

Bravo explained that most of the budget amendment, 2,376,291.25 euros (93.17% of the total), will be allocated to the Operational Services area, where the aim is to implement a comprehensive maintenance contract for various areas of the municipality, including the Coastal Path, with a budget of 1,218,000 euros; 121,000 euros will go towards the plumbing supplies contract and 170,000 euros to the maintenance of ornamental fountains. Other lines of action include plans to increase allocations for painting and concrete, the councillor added, noting that they also intend to contract the painting of the Town Hall façade and the branch offices.

The remainder of the budget amendment, 174,061.91 euros, will be allocated to Civil Protection, reflecting “the government team’s firm commitment to safety and prevention in the municipality”, the Executive stated in a press release. This investment will fund the purchase of medical supplies, internvention equipment, road safety systems, drones for emergencies, specialised clothing and the modernisation of the vehicle fleet, including the bodywork and branding of motorbike. In this regard, Bravo explained that four motorbikes to be received from the Local Police will be adapted for Civil Protection, in addition to the four it already owns. “These are not words but actions: real resources are finally being provided to an essential service that has been overlooked for years. Today, structures are being strengthened, the response is being professionalised and those who protect us are being protected”, said the councillor for the area, Francisco Jerez (Vox), in the press release.

Interventions during plenary session
The opposition criticised that a new budget amendment had been made, the third since the budget was approved, with an unfavourable report from the comptroller and with expenditure, they pointed out, that is structural and should be included in the ordinary budget. “This is pure improvisation... I don’t know if it’s the ‘leitmotiv’ or the headline for this government team, but you could say there is neither order nor law: once again, a budget amendment is being presented without a favourable report from the comptroller”, said the spokesperson for the PSOE Municipal Group at the Town Hall, Roy Pérez.

“The first point in the ten-point motion of no confidence was precisely the issue of disorder and lack of control, and here we have an example of both. The second was the need for rigour in complying with the law, yet the report is unfavourable and by a different comptroller”, said the spokesperson for the Ciudadanos Municipal Group, José Carlos Martín, who also pointed out that the amendment includes “structural expenses.”
The councillor for finance highlighted the fact that the Town Hall has a budget, something that, he noted, the previous government team failed to deliver. Bravo also defended the budget amendment and said that the fact that they want to repeat this investment in the next budgets “does not mean it is not a new expense nor that it should be postponed until the following year. Budget amendments do not rule out structural spending, and that the only two conditions are that the expense was not previously foreseen and that it cannot be delayed until the next year”, concluded Bravo.
