For five days, residents of Las Lagunas, Mijas and visitors enjoyed a wide range of activities and performances at the Las Lagunas Fair. The last day Sunday 29th, when the festivities began in the morning with the 13th edition of the threshing exhibition and singing at Cortijo Don Elías, a traditional demonstration of farm work. The singing was performed by José García “El Petro” and the verdiales group Fiesta de Amigos de los Montes de Málaga. Numerous neighbours attended this event, as well as a large representation from the municipal corporation, led by the mayoress of the city, Ana Mata (PP), together with the councillor for Festivities, Silvia Marín (PP), and the councillor for Livestock and Agriculture and deputy mayor of La Lagunas, Eloy Belmonte (Vox).
“This exhibition is held in the spirit of preserving traditions, a way of life that people once relied on to survive, not only to feed their families but also to earn a living by selling the flour obtained from the wheat through this traditional threshing method. This morning, we saw both older people and younger ones remembering that time, when they had to carry out extremely hard work in the countryside under intense heat”, explained the mayoress of Mijas.
Salvador Peña was the neighbour in charge of the demonstration. "In the past, there were many threshing yards all over Mijas. Every member of the family contributed, one person would do one task, others another, everyone played their part”, he explained. "Flamenco is closely linked to this kind of farm work, in this case with the 'cantes de trilla' (songs of the threshing), in which the men would sing while threshing, usually in the form of a dialogue with the animals they were working with, which kept them company", explained Diego Morilla, president of the Peña Flamenca Unión de Cante, which collaborated with the event. "These are our roots, where we come from, how our grandparents and even our parents earned their living, and they are still going strong. In fact, in La Alquería, I still see them working with oxen and mules, and they even have a pony. These are things that bring us closer to our roots", added the councillor for Livestock and Agriculture, Eloy Belmonte (Vox).
Daytime fair
Just a few metres from Cortijo Don Elías, on Miguel Hernández Avenue, the second day of the daytime fair took place, featuring performances by the group Decibelios and DJ Cristian Galán, who were in charge of keeping the atmosphere lively.
Performances
The final touch to the Las Lagunas festivities was provided by performances by Alba Dreid, Fran Ocaña and Los Yakis. As on previous nights, the Municipal Booth was packed to capacity. With a great turnout and a fantastic atmosphere, the fair came to an end. “It’s been a very successful fair, with so many people getting involved to make it even bigger, just look at how full the booth was every night, on every day of the fair”, said the councillor for Festivities and Traditions, Silvia Marín (PP). She concluded by thanking “all the residents of Las Lagunas, the people of Mijas and all visitors for taking part in our fair and making it so enjoyable and fun. We’ll see you at the next one, the La Cala Fair”.
Special Measures
During the five days of the Las Lagunas Fair, the Mijas Town Hall implemented special measures. From the Cleanliness Department, the councillor in charge, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), stated:
“Our assessment of this fair couldn’t be more positive. We’ve experienced some extraordinary days, with outstanding participation and an atmosphere that has been a real source of pride for Las Lagunas. I would like to thank all the departments that made possible a safe, well-organised fair designed for families to enjoy”.
“One of the most appreciated aspects by residents and visitors has been the cleanliness of the fairgrounds. We’ve received many compliments on the impeccable condition of both the daytime fair and the night events, which is the result of continuous and well-coordinated work by the cleaning staff. In addition, thanks to the collaboration of the Mancomunidad, recycling points were reinforced, making it easier to separate waste correctly without affecting the smooth running of the fair”, Belmonte added.
