June 28th marks International LGBT+ Pride Day, also known as Pride Day, a celebration that brings the world together in support of freedom and diversity, encouraging people to be themselves and reject any prejudice based on their sexual identity. Mijas is once again joining in this celebration and this Friday, 27th of June, under the slogan ‘Mijas con + orgullo’ (Mijas with + pride), will raise awareness by reading the institutional manifesto at the diversity mural, located in Mijas Pueblo next to the Town Hall, at 11:00 hours. The event is organised by the Department of Family and Equal Opportunities of the Mijas Town Hall and the Red de Municipios Orgullosos (Network of Proud Towns). The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), explained that “in Mijas we reaffirm our commitment to equality and diversity, because we all have the freedom to love and discrimination has no place in a fair society such as ours. Of course, we remember the historic struggle of all the individuals and groups who have worked and continue to work for true equality”.
This struggle remains ongoing, as highlighted by the president of the LGBT association Colega Torremolinos, Santiago Rubio, who said that “there is more diversity now than in the past, but there are still certain patterns that lead us to believe there will always be a need to continue fighting for the rights we have already achieved to be respected”. He also explained that “most of us are more engaged in making this a reality, and adults are increasingly educated about diversity and the acceptance of different identities, which coexist perfectly well. However, more education is still needed for younger generations, we must explain things more clearly and remember the past in order to see that the present is changing”.
