UP instructors Raquel González and María del Mar Ortiz brought together over a hundred people to practise this discipline

Yoga is for everyone, as demonstrated by the two events held in Mijas to mark International Yoga Day. More than just a physical activity, yoga is also a valuable tool for supporting mental well-being. These sessions were organised by the UP in Mijas to celebrate the occasion. "The two teachers from the UP in Mijas wanted to celebrate this day outdoors. This morning we were up early with María del Mar in Las Lagunas and here in La Cala with Raquel , right by the Torreón and the sea, which is the beauty of this activity," said the UP councillor, Silvia Marín (PP), who attended the event along with the Popular Party councillors Daniel Gómez Teruel and Juan José Torres Trella. PSOE councillor Hipólito Zapico was also present in La Cala. The sessions were not only attended by UP students, of whom there are over 150, but also by local residents, as the classes were open to everyone.

In La Cala

There was a large turnout at the Plaza del Torreón in La Cala. "It was very well received despite the time, ten in the morning, and I hadn’t considered the heat, but they showed up and stayed until the end of the class", explained Raquel González, who led this masterclass. "Yoga teaches you to stand, breathe and feel. It’s beneficial because it brings you calm, so, as well as strengthening and making your body more flexible, it helps you find that sense of calm we all need in our daily lives", the instructor added.

Among the students was Julio González, who remarked, “I have a physical job, and since I started practising yoga, I’ve noticed a radical change in my body, my life, and the way I deal with things. The truth is, the benefits are everywhere. So, I’m extremely happy with the year I’ve spent doing yoga". For her part, María Núñez pointed out that "Raquel completely changed my understanding of what yoga is, and now I’m in love with it. It’s a beautiful philosophy. I used to suffer from back and neck pain, but since I started practising yoga, I’ve noticed my muscles are stronger, and the pain has gone. For me, it’s been a real discovery".

Las Lagunas

International Yoga Day was also celebrated at Blas Infante Park in Las Lagunas, this time led by instructor María del Mar Ortiz, with a session focused on connecting with nature, practising yoga asanas, and relaxation. The UP teacher explained that the event had additional goals: "To introduce people who have not had this experience before and to show them the value of yoga, not just as a form of physical exercise, but also for mental and emotional well-being at all levels". Ortiz also stressed that "the greatest benefit comes when the mind reaches that state of peace, of mental stillness".

Among the participants in this session was Jorge Navarro, who shared that "yoga gives me peace of mind, relaxation and physical fitness, which is also important, because it's not just exercise, but there are moments when you focus on yourself and disconnect from the rest of the world". Gloria Lavado, said: "I enjoy practising yoga because it helps you connect with yourself and dedicate time to yourself, which is not silly, it’s actually very important".

  • En Las Lagunas se ofreció una sesión al aire libre en el parque Blas Infante. |

Finally, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), a member of the local government team, emphasised that "yoga is ultimately a way of life that you become part of; once you embrace and enjoy this discipline, there’s no turning back". If you’d like to practise yoga, remember that you can do so through the workshops offered by UP Mijas.
