The photography exhibition from the UP workshops stands out for the quality of its work

  • 50 large-format images show the students' progress throughout the year
  • Los talleres de fotografía de la UP inauguraron el pasado viernes 13 su exposición de final de curso con una selección de trabajos muy especial.

The theme was ‘tronies’, a type of portrait with surrealist touches

The UP photography workshops opened their end-of-year exhibition on Friday 13th with a very special selection of works. This year's theme was 'tronies', 17th-century portraits that originated in the Netherlands and explored human physiognomy and the expressiveness of emotions. The UP students also added a surrealist touch by decorating the models with contemporary objects.

Francisco Rosado has been running these workshops for years, and once again, the artistic quality of his students was evident across all levels. Amid the current AI craze and its application in photography, this end-of-year exhibition showcased all the skills the students have developed throughout the year.

“As every year, we choose a theme for the exhibition. In previous years, it has been music, classical painting, landscapes, or the nude. This year, we have focused on a specific style called ‘tronies’, portraits painted in the 17th and 18th centuries in Holland that broke with the tradition of depicting nobility and instead portrayed ordinary people with expressive faces. We have given them a twist with touches of surrealism and the absurdity”, explained Rosado about the theme. He also invited visitors to “look closely at each piece and discover the strangeness in each one, I'm sure you'll be surprised”.

The opening of the exhibition was a great success and was attended by many visitors as well as the students and models participating in the exhibition. The councillor responsible for this area, Silvia Marín (PP), also attended. "I would like to congratulate all the students for the work they have done and for everything they are showing here. We can see the quality of the works. I have been very surprised by the theme chosen this year, which is so original and full of detail".

The exhibition features more than 50 large-format works by a total of 100 students from different levels of this workshop. The theme attracted a lot of attention, as did the execution of each photo and the quality of the final result.

Students

The poster advertising the exhibition is the work of one of the students, Juan Valle, with his interpretation of 'La Morena' by Julio Romero de Torres. “I was really excited that my photo was chosen for the poster. I didn’t expect it. This year’s theme made us work very hard. This is my second year and I’m at the intermediate level. I highly recommend the workshop, as it’s a different way to express creativity and you learn a lot”.

Another participant, Adriana Benavides, said: “We all looked for an inspirational painting from that era. Then we added contemporary elements, in my case, a dog collar, a chain, and some pompoms, something eye-catching and different. I really enjoy this workshop. I’ve been attending for several years, and every year we do something new”.

Artificial intelligence

As a new feature, some students in this UP workshop used AI to create their final pieces, integrating it with studio photography. This was the case for José Manuel Quintero. “I wanted to merge the two techniques. I took a portrait of a family member in my home studio, then used AI to create an octopus-shaped headdress and dress. It was a long and labour-intensive process because you have to unify the light, textures, colour, tone… to blend everything seamlessly and achieve the final shot. I wanted to create a more artistic photo”.

Both students and teachers are very aware of the importance and rise of AI in this art form. According to Rosado: “Photography as we know it will change within just one year. Some, or many, will be left behind if they don’t jump on this new bandwagon. It will be like the leap from analogue to digital, now we are moving into AI. Here, we are ready”.

The exhibition is well worth a visit and will remain at the Casa de la Cultura in Las Lagunas until July 11th.
