The complex puzzle of mobility in Mijas was presented to residents across the municipality’s three main areas over the past week. The first meeting was held in La Cala on Thursday 12th, followed by a second session at the Training and Employment Building on Friday 13th. The final meeting took place in the plenary hall in Mijas Pueblo on Thursday 19th. This round of public participation, part of the development of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS), gave residents the opportunity to share their vision for the roadmap that will define how we move around the municipality over the next decade.

The head of the Citizen Participation Department, Ángeles Afán de Rivera, attended all three meetings and gave a positive assessment of this phase. "The meetings have been very constructive and issues that are quite common for the people of Mijas are being raised", she said. Each session followed the same format: a presentation of the initial diagnosis by the consultancy firm, followed by an open forum where attendees could report "the problems they face in terms of mobility, whether by bus, on foot or by car". The residents participated and raised complaints and proposals about trouble spots, ranging from the need to improve bus routes to difficulties with parking and obstacles on the pavements. This feedback confirmed data from the study, which showed that over 60% of journeys in the town are made by private vehicle.

The work continues
These three meetings mark the end of the in-person consultation phase, but the work to define the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS) is far from over. As Afán de Rivera explained, the consultancy firm will now incorporate all the citizens' proposals into the technical study, meaning that "they will continue working and, after reviewing the ideas and issues, the company conducting the analysis will have to present a project to the Town Hall". This technical study will continue throughout the summer as, according to the head of Participation, mobility flows change due to the increase in population the municipality experiences in July and August".
Online survey
For those who were unable to attend the meetings, Afán de Rivera reminded that there is still time to have your say. An online mobility survey, which has already received around 800 responses, remains open on the Town Hall website (www.mijas.es) until the study phase concludes. This is a valuable opportunity to share your views on what kind of future you want for Mijas. Don’t stand still.
