At the plenary session held on Wednesday 11th of May, the government team of Mijas Town Hall approved the second budget amendment of the year, this time for just over 15 million euros, from the Treasury surplus. According to the councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP), this credit modification includes investments and new projects which, he said, have been agreed upon with the various municipal departments, “which have justified their necessary and urgent nature, considering that it cannot be postponed until next year and, based on these criteria, which this government team also shares, we are bringing it to the plenary session today”.
Regarding the budget allocations, the councillor for Economy highlighted those aimed at improving the machinery, equipment and work of the Local Police, those that will maintain the home care service, others that will increase subsidies for family aid and local groups, as well as funds for the maintenance of the Gran Parque, the new swimming pool in La Cala and municipal car parks, among other areas. There are also almost fifty project proposals, including the development of social housing on the Finca El Maro area, the restoration of the Los Malagueños and El Cortijuelo farmhouses, the improvement of the Centre for Active Participation in Las Lagunas and the construction of a new fire station in Mijas.
Public housing
One of the most important initiatives, according to the government team, is the drafting of the technical project for the execution, by the council, of 40 dwellings on the site known as Finca El Maro, covering an area of 5,731 square metres. A sum of 150,000 euros has been allocated for this purpose. Once the draft has been prepared, and after the various projects have been submitted, they will be prioritised due to the social importance of this initiative, which the Town Hall describes as “the biggest boost to public housing in the last two decades”.

Works on streets and squares
Another key aspect of this budget amendment is the comprehensive refurbishment of various streets in the municipality, specifically Ciprés, Pablo Ruiz Picasso, Cártama, Segovia, Júzcar, Butiplaya, Cómpeta, San Benjamín, San Braulio, Río Guadiana, Archidona, Cueva del Agua, Alemania, Butibamba and Manantial, among others, as well as improvements to the layout of the Entrerríos road, the widening of the A-7053 between Venta La Morena and the Mijas Golf roundabout, a new road connection between the La Manzanilla area and the Mirador la Sierrezuela, the remodelling of the roundabout on the access road to the racecourse, the pedestrianisation of Calle María Barranco, the resurfacing of public roads and repairs or improvements to pedestrian accessibility on the northern ring road.
Similarly, the drafting of projects for the construction of an underground car park in the La Vega area (150,000 euros), a public car park in Las Cañadas (150,000 euros) and on the La Cala boulevard (200,000 euros), as well as surface parking in the racecourse area (33,000 euros).

The amendment also includes a budget of 80,000 euros for the feasibility study of the new recreational park for the Mijas donkeys, which will provide these animals with more spacious stables and recreation areas, all on a plot of over 10,000 square metres next to the southern road of the town.
Other actions
The amendment also includes the drafting of the technical project for the improvement of the Centre for Active Participation in Las Lagunas (80,000 euros), the repair of the roofs of the sports pavilion in La Cala (150,000 euros), as well as the drafting of projects to improve the adjacent football pitch in Las Lagunas (55,000 euros) and the football pitch in Osunillas (100,000 euros).
Opposition reactions
After this point was presented, the PSOE Mijas expressed surprise that this budget modification did not reserve funds to “immediately” repair the roof of the Las Lagunas swimming pool, “which currently prevents thousands of users from swimming or attending backstroke classes; however, it does include nearly half a million euros to sponsor three sporting events, and we will see what economic impact these have on the municipality”, commented the Socialist councillor Josele González.
In response, Bravo explained that “the Infrastructure Department is already working on putting this work out to tender, which is more complex than it seems, and it may not be possible to award the contract before January 1st, so we prefer to use this credit modification for other actions and include this repair in the 2026 budget, with a future credit retention”.

For his part, the spokesperson for Ciudadanos, José Carlos Martín, criticised, among other things, that “the investment of 150,000 euros to redraft the project for the new fire station, when there was already one that was about to be implemented and has now been discarded”.
On this point, councillor Mario Bravo stated that “the project planned by the previous government team was going to cost several million euros, as it also included an emergency school, but I believe we have other priorities and, furthermore, this government team considers that this infrastructure would be better located elsewhere, specifically on the plot currently occupied by the vehicle impound on Camino Viejo de Coín”.

Finally, the opposition voted against this point, citing, among other reasons, the unfavourable reports they claim were issued by the Comptroller’s Office. During her speech, Mayoress Ana Mata (PP) praised the local government’s commitment to driving key projects for citizens, many of which had already been announced and which, by being allocated a budget, “demonstrate that our commitment is firm. We are not talking about words, but about actions”.
She also took advantage of her final speaking turn to defend the management of the current government team, “it requires order, seriousness and rigour to comply with the rules and legal certainty that every local administration must uphold”, while also reporting that “we have already begun working with the new comptroller to develop an economic and financial plan to optimise the Mijas Town Hall’s expenditure and investments”.
