  • The contract will be in force for four years
  • El contrato también contempla un servicio de urgencias veterinarias.

Among other actions, the successful bidder will actively promote the adoption of the animals taken in

The Mijas Town Hall has signed a contract for the collection, transfer, shelter and management of pets and other animals. This contract has a budget of 1,387,592.72 euros (including VAT) and will be valid for four years.  The total cost is distributed over the following years: 173,499.08 euros in 2025; between 2026 and 2028, 346,898.18 euros per year; and in 2029, 173,499.10 euros.

This was announced by the councillor for Animal Welfare, Marco Cortés (PP), who explained that the aim is to ensure “the welfare of all animals in Mijas and their proper treatment”. In this regard, the awarded company will be responsible for collecting and sheltering animals considered abandoned or lost  in public spaces, always following the principles of animal welfare at the centre and acting in accordance with the procedures established by law.

Cortés emphasised that this contract includes a 24-hour service every day of the week for urgent cases, that is, those that pose a real danger to people or cause severe suffering to animals. This service will be activated following notification from the Local Police or, failing that, by the Municipal Health Service, “with all that this entails for speeding up police action”.

The company will be required to collect animals when owners no longer want them, animals found on properties involved in judicial proceedings, or those affected by diseases that may pose a risk to people, among other situations.

Accommodation

Additionally, the contractor must provide shelter for collected animals at their facilities, where the animals may be put up for adoption. During the shelter period, necessary procedures will be carried out to enable the recovery of lost animals. Regarding abandoned animals, the company will actively promote their adoption using its own resources, social media platforms, and collaboration with animal protection societies. In addition, veterinary treatments will be provided, and the contract also covers an emergency veterinary service that includes transport and a daytime emergency service until 22:00 hours and nighttime emergency service operational from 22:00 to 10:00 hours.
