The CAC Mijas and the Helsinki connection: a cultural exchange that is growing stronger

  • Hurry up because the exhibition closes its doors on Saturday 14th of June

Around twenty artists from the EVA International Art Gallery are exhibiting their works in the third exhibition 'Following in the footsteps of Dalí and Picasso'

The Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) in Mijas Pueblo has once again become a window onto Nordic art. On Friday 6th of June, the temporary exhibition 'Following in the footsteps of Dalí and Picasso' was inaugurated, an exhibition that, for the third consecutive year, brings the works of around twenty Finnish artists to our municipality. The initiative is the result of the successful collaboration between the Remedios Medina Foundation, which manages the CAC, the EVA International Art Gallery in Helsinki and Mijas Town Hall.

The exhibition, comprising 26 works covering various themes and techniques, will be open to the public only until Saturday 14th of June. The brevity of the exhibition is due to the fact that many of the artists, as highlighted by the director of the CAC, Francisco Javier Fructuoso, "have travelled to come and see their works displayed in our museum and, above all, to visit Mijas". Fructuoso also noted the event’s strong appea, with "more than 250 tourists coming throughout week specifically to see this exhibition".

A cultural exchange with a wink to Dalí

The owner of the Finnish gallery, Eeva Kulmala, explained the fun twist of the opening, where some attendees wore unique headgear, as she herself did. "We wanted to add a fun twist and celebrate Salvador Dalí, who used to organise 'twisted head' parties, as he called them, and would wear a shoe as a hat, for example. We thought, 'let's celebrate his great creativity tonight', and that's why we're wearing funny hats"’.

  • El CAC Mijas y la conexión Helsinki: un intercambio cultural que se consolida

The councillor for culture, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), who was present at the event, spoke very highly of this cultural exchange, saying that "this is a museum linked to Picasso, a great international figure, and in this way Mijas is positioning itself culturally, but also as a tourist destination".

For his part, councillor Mario Bravo (PP) highlighted the role of the CAC as an ambassador and tourist attraction because the exhibition"‘allows artists to come to our city and get to discover our world, and while we get to know their work’.

In short, this is a unique opportunity to get a glimpse of Finland without leaving Mijas. But hurry, because art sometimes lasts only a moment.
