Mayka Hernández and María Vega showcase their work and the process behind it

The Mijas Town Hall, through the Tourism Department, has inaugurated a new exhibition of local crafts featuring artists Mayka Hernández and María Vega, members of the Mijas Craft Association. The exhibition can be visited throughout June at the Mijas Pueblo Tourist Office.

The councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), highlighted the importance of initiatives like this. “These exhibitions strengthen our cultural identity and support local talent. Mijas is a town with a rich craft tradition, and it’s essential that both residents and visitors can learn about and appreciate the work of our artisans". He also stressed that the Tourism Department “is committed to initiatives that connect culture and art with the visitor experience. This exhibition offers an opportunity to discover not only unique pieces but also the stories and processes behind each creation”.

Artisan Mayka Hernández presents a selection of her copper jewellery work. “I wanted to bring a small sample of what my work as a craftswoman involves. Not just the finished piece, but also the process: images, tools... Often, we see an object without realising the craft behind it", she explained.

Mayka, who learned her technique in Chile, pointed out that "after fifteen years in this trade, I have spent the last four focusing on copper, a very noble material with many possibilities. I buy sheets, wire, profiles... and from scratch, with a saw, file, fire and hammer, I build each piece". Her jewellery, strongly inspired by nature, is marked by an organic aesthetic. "I have always been connected to plants. The time came for me, and a botanical collection was born that is still growing. Nature has no straight lines, there are curves, textures, it is organic jewellery that lets the material take the lead", explained the artisan.

Meanwhile, ceramic artist María Vega wanted to show in this exhibition an overview of her evolution as a craftswoman. "I've focused on telling my story from when I started until now. The pieces I've brought also reflect the people I've learned from and collaborated with. For me, ceramics is also about sharing". María works with different techniques, such as the potter's wheel, hand modelling and the use of moulds, adapting each piece to what she wants to convey. "I like making everyday items that are useful. I think that’s bringing tradition into the present, so a piece isn’t a luxury but something that accompanies you in your daily life", she said. "I also restore old objects... ceramics has this ability to connect the practical with the beautiful", she added.
